5 Things to Do With Your Children This Christmas Season

The Christmas season brings with it more than just bright-colored leaves and frostbitten noses. It also brings people closer together, causing us to act more kindly to each other, react more quietly to stress, and brings our families closer together than during any other time of the year. We’re much more thankful of the things that we have and of our loved ones. Opportunities abound here at the end of the year to do all sorts of things that the whole family can pitch in and enjoy, building lasting memories and strengthening the bond of family. It’s more than just baking and wrapping presents-the Christmas season brings an unlimited of ways you and your children can have fun and grow closer.

1. If you’ve been holiday shopping at all in the past, you’re sure to have seenthose small Christmas trees that are no larger than 2-3 feet tall. -These trees are perfect to buy up and put into a child’s room. Find a place to put it, desk, dresser, really-anywhere-and spend time with your child decorating it to fit their tastes. Is your daughter into theatre? Go out and find or make, ornaments, relating to Broadway or theatres! Or maybe your son is into sports. -There’s certainly no one that is hard pressed to find sports ornaments out there. Giving your child their own mini Christmas tree to decorate their room with is a fun and memorable activity you guys can do together!

2. Everybody makes Christmas cookies at some point, and inviting your child to help you is a great way to include your kids into your holiday traditions! Children love helping theirparents bake, and you can make it even more fun by decorating some little tins with your kid and making some homemade cookies presents for their friends, teachers, or family! So crank up the Christmas tunes and turn on that oven!

3. Treats aren’t the only fun things to make during the holiday season. There are a variety of different fun crafts that can be made from gingerbread houses, coloring pictures, ornaments, custom present packages, and more. Take a trip to your local craft store with your children and see what you can come up with. Homemade things are always more memorable than bought ones, and are much more fun to make! Involve the whole family in a night of craft making where you and your children can open up and discover that inner artist!

4. Gag gifts. -This issomething my family has always done, and even though we have a large number of people to do this with, you could easily do it with any number of people. About a week or so before Christmas, on Thanksgiving, we put all of each others ‘ names in a hat and randomly draw one out each, making sure that we don’t get our own names. Then we spend, deciding upon the “gag gift” that we’re going to present to the person whose name we drew. (Something embarrassing or funny.) Then we all get together on Christmas Eve and exchange gag gifts. It’s an extremely fun and memorable tradition, and something that really brings everyone together.

5. Planning Christmas themed fun nights with your kids can also be extremely fun and exciting! A family night of Christmas carol karaoke is a great wayto get into the holiday spirit. -Eggnog, hot chocolate and homemade cookies are another great way to spruce up a warm winter night. There are also plenty of Christmas movies to choose from, and spending an evening eating snacks and watching them is something that anyone in the family will love.

It’s so unfortunate that many of us spend so much effort doing the things that create stress around the holidays, when with just a little bit of time and energy we can do the things that really make Christmas special and bring our families closer together. This is a time of loving, kindness, and fun. This season opens itself up for endless ways to enjoy it, and no matter what your interests are you can find a great activity that you enjoy. For children, these are some of the most magical, memorable moments they’ll ever remember, and all of these wonderful traditions will only make them that much more special.
